Contract Negotiations

Letters of Support

INTERNATIONAL LONGSHOREMEN’S ASSOCIATION
LOCAL NO. 1291
PHILADELPHIA, PA

November 20, 2002

Mr. Patrick T. Riley
Secretary Treasurer/Business Agent
ILA Local 273
20 Church Ave.
Saint John N.B.
Canada E2M 4P4

Dear Brother Riley,

We recently became aware of the difficulties in negotiating you are experiencing with the employer group in the Port of Saint John. We are quite certain you recognize the continuing trend of employers and employers groups to reduce wages and benefits paid, not just to your Local, but also to all Union Labour across Canada and the U.S.

All the Local Unions with the ILA have fought long and hard for a fair wage, health coverage and the ability to retire with some semblance of dignity. ILA Local 1291 President Sal Candelaria, the Executive Board and all our Rank and File members support the efforts of ILA Local 273 to maintain a decent wage, safe working conditions and their ability to provide for their families.

We urge you to continue to stand tall, in the face of adversity, for what you have earned and continue to deserve. You are not alone!

In Unity,

The Executive Board
ILA Local 1291
