ALL JAPAN DOCKWORKERS’ UNION

Tokyo, Japan
November 15, 2002

Dear Brother Riley,

I learned that there was little progress in bargaining over the revisions of the labour agreement at the Port of Saint John.

International shipping companies are launching an offensive against the ILWU on the U.S. west coast and the EU directive is threatening European dockworkers. They intend to hire casual workers who are not within the framework of the guaranteed wage system in order to eliminate benefit funds. A similar offensive action is taking place in Japan, too.

Colleagues of the ILA Local 273 have been engaged in the activities emphasizing international solidarity among dockworkers of the world.

We, the members of the All Japan Dockworkers’ Union (Zenkowan) extend our wholehearted support to the ILA Local 273’s struggle and wish you a total success.

In Solidarity,

Kenji Yasuda
President
