Local 273 has 163 members and supplies labour for all stevedoring operations in the Port of Saint John.

The Local and its members are responsible for the loading and unloading of all cargo ships as well as associated terminal work.

Supplying labour for the gear and mechanical repair, cleaner and linesmen classifications is also a responsibilty of the General Longshore Workers Bargaining Unit. In addition to cargo ships, the linesmen also tie up and let go oil and cruise ship vessels.

The years 1999 and 2000 witnessed the merger of the Checkers and Ship-liner Bargaining Units with the General Longshore Workers under the banner of Local 273. This new merged local will be better equipped to face the challenges of the future.

The cargo handled by Local 273 includes containers, forest products, rocksalt, fertilizer, steel, fishmeal, general cargo and automobiles. Saint John Longshoremen are also responsible for handling baggage, when required, for cruise ship vessels.
