Contract Negotiations

Letters of Support

International Longshoremen’s Association AFL-CIO

17 Battery Place, Suite 930, New York, New York
John Bowers
President

November 5, 2002

Dear Brother Riley,

We understand that your Local finds itself in very difficult contract negotiations and there are some concerns about settling matters at the bargaining table. You should know that has become an all-to-common theme of late and that you are not alone. Industry employers seem intent on attacking the standards that we have fought for long and hard.

Local 273 has proven itself to be an I.L.A. affiliate that has been there for others when they need help. Dockworkers unions in North America and around the world have benefited from your generosity. You should know that, if required, our support will be there for you.

As Chairman of the Dockers section of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (“ITF”), I am in the position to recommend that the ITF also give you some support, as it represents some five million workers world wide.

Please report on any changes in the status of negotiations. We also ask you to convey our feelings of solidarity to the I.L.A. Local 273 membership.

Fraternally Yours,

John Bowers
President
