This message is in response to the position that your union has taken on the war in Iraq. I was happy to hear of your position last night at the protest in front of the US consolite in halifax. Having worked at the port for three years at the employers association it made me happy to see that the working men of the port are opposed to this unjust war against a nation of people who have been fucked over by the the greed of a few just because there is money on the table economically. I would also like to say hi to Freddy Nice and for him to give me a e-mail. Thank you again for your support of the people of Iraq and hopefully more will follow in your path. Paul Leger

I read about your stance on shipping out military materials to Iraq and I think it is great you are opposing this. Keep it up! We need more activism like this. I am sure it will cause a problem but the war is causing a problem too so anything that can be done to get the message out that people are against it is just great. Keep it up! In solidarity, Cynthia

Thank you for the 'hot cargo edict' We in America are held hostage by our criminal president and administration. Only from outside of the US borders will the message ring clear. Please keep the edict going - it will also help to encourage other port cities in the world to do the same.

I just got an email about the ILA local 273, and their work stoppage protest with regards to the illegal invasion of Iraq. THANK YOU SO MUCH. It's fantastic to see working class Canadians excercise their strength in one of the only avenues for democracy we have left: DIRECT ACTION. May other unions and individuals be inspired by your action and compassion. Long Live the IWW, Long Live the ILA local 273. Let's show these empires who runs things, and who creates the wealth they control the world with. Thank you again. John David Price

I've just been listening to "As It Happens" on CBC radio, and I heard about your decision not to cooperate with the American invasion effort. Keep up the Good Work - My family and I are proud of you, and we're 100% behind you, along with millions of other Americans. I was just wondering if anyone had any funny or interesting stories out there about my dad "Gerald Morrisey" as you know he suffered from brain damage back in 1981, when I was only 10, so I don't remember a lot about him now. Boilermaking was his life, & he was a proud brother! So if anyone can share anything with me it would warm my heart greatly! Thanks so much! Kim Morrisey

I am seeking to find out about a Sidney George Knight who was listed as a printer in 1915 as he signed up for the Canadian Expeditionary Foreces in Winnipeg.. Is there some archive record to see if he was a memeber of the union in the early 1900s..He came to Canada as a BHC (if this is the same person as I have been looking for..George Sidney Knightall) I believe that he changed his name..and shortened his last name..for one reason or another..to Sidney George Knight. When he signed up he was a member of the 90th.Regiment.. I am hoping to find some additional information about this great uncle.. Thanks SKS..hope someone will know how to access this information..

Fellow Workers, I came across your interesting site while searching for information on industrial unionism, which drew my attention to the December 2001 article on the same subject. I find it very odd that the article fails to make even a single mention the Industrial Workers of the World, the union most closely associated with the principles of industrial unionism. Although they admittedly were based in the United States (as were the Knights of Labour, whom your article mentions), they were quite active and successful in Canada prior to the First World War, and are still active there. The Wobblies' work in the logging camps of British Columbia, to cite but one example, made an enormous difference in the lives of thousands of workers. The I.W.W. and the I.L.A. may have had disagreements in the past, but by ignoring them in your article you misrepresent history and disserve your readers. Respectfully, Jim Crutchfield Philadelphia, PA.

Why are crew on Norwegian cruise lines allowed to work without a contract? I am working now and have just been going along after my contract ended but I am still working. Does this mean that when my time for vacation comes they will say that I have not completed my contract?

Support ILA Local 1422 !!!!The ILA & ILWU must throw their support with the Charleston local as this operation is no different than what happened in Australia with Patrick Stevedoring and the Australian Government joining forces and bringing in the trained scabs to take over the docks and throw the Maritime Union of Australia out.  This whole thing about right to work states is dangerous for unions as we see in Charleston.

I see by the links on your web page that you have a lot of our ILWU web sites listed. I read your History, very interesting. I have to admit that I did not know that the ILA was in Canada. I thought they were just on the East coast & the Gulf in a America. I know that the I.L.W.U. is in Canada. So I learned something, I like that. Pat and Comrades, Belated congratulations. It's great to see your web-site is up and running. There is no better way of explaining the history of the port and the struggle of the maritime workers than archiving it on the web. At present, we are running a course on the history of the International Dockworkers Movement, that came to the aid of the Liverpool Dockers during our 28 month stike. So at some stage, the students(who are all sacked Liverpool Dockers) on the course will writing to you. All the best, Terry.
