Letters of Support
The Liverpool Dockworkers
29 Hope Street,
Liverpool,
Merseyside L1 9BQ
29th October 2002
Message of Support.
Dear All,
It is with great concern that we hear the Port Employers in Saint John,
New Brunswick are preparing to attack the pay and working conditions of
our brothers at I.L.A. Local 273. Once again it appears that politically
backed management manoeuvres are seeking to maximize the Port Authorities
vast profits at the expense of Longshore Workers.
No doubt a number of complex forces are at work in such circumstances,
but as with our brothers and sisters on the West Coast of America, we
must not allow the Longshoremen of Saint John to be isolated in any fight
that weakens the rights, the pay or the conditions of Port Workers.
The global contributions of support made by the members of Local 273
towards international solidarity has been immense and Dockers Unions the
world over should be pledging their support and solidarity in return.
500 Liverpool Dockworkers and their Families express their utmost solidarity
and support to their fellow workers at I.L.A. Local 273 and call on the
International Fraternity of Dockworkers to do likewise.
We will do everything in our power to support your campaign for better
pay and working conditions and offer our services (if needed) in building
support for what ever decision I.L.A. Local 273 take in making sure the
membership achieves a victory.
Yours in Solidarity,
Jim Nolan.
